Public concern about our\nincreasing exposure to electromagnetic radiation<\/a> is on the rise.\nDespite claims by government and industry about \u201cno health risks,\u201d proactive\nconsumers are looking for solutions. One that has recently appeared on the\nscene is a shiny black rock called shungite.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

EMF (electromagnetic frequency) protective remedies are a dime-a-dozen on the internet, but what can we believe? How do we separate fact from fiction? Is shungite a healing miracle or fanciful hoopla?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As someone with a background in science, I\nlook there first. I am a health and science writer with a background in both\nthe physical and biological sciences. In addition to many years\u2019 as an RN and\nthen as an advanced practice psychiatric nurse, I have spent the last 15 years\nin integrative and functional medicine. What many don\u2019t know is that my first\ndegree<\/em> was in geology\u2014so it\u2019s really no surprise that the healing powers\nof crystals have captured my heart and soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even with this extensive background in\nscience, experience has taught me that science has its limitations and other\nbodies of wisdom should not be so quickly discarded. Science\u2014or what we\nWesterners generally consider \u201clegitimate science\u201d\u2014often lags behind the wisdom\nof the ancients, and I have seen many well-meaning scientists blinded by their\nbiases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We live in a sea of radiation<\/a><\/strong> and it\u2019s getting worse. Computers, cell phones, cordless phones, smart meters and Wi-Fi\u2014it\u2019s all around us. Research is mounting about the potential health risks of our long-term exposure to this unnatural radiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are electrical beings. Everything in the\nnatural world produces an electromagnetic field, from animals to humans to the\nearth herself. German studies show that living cells emit something called\nbiophotons\u2014weak electromagnetic fields that help them communicate with one\nanother.[1]<\/sup><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It makes sense that EMFs from manmade devices\ncould not help but interact with our own electromagnetic fields, for better or\nfor worse. But do cell phones cause brain\ncancer<\/strong><\/a>? What about DNA damage? Reproductive problems? We can\u2019t\npoint to definitive data\u2014yet<\/em>. But as any electrosensitive individual\nwill tell you, the symptoms are real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many are beating the drum for shungite. In\nthis article, I will review what we know about this mysterious rock and attempt\nto sort through the quasi-scientific mumbo jumbo while dispensing with a few\nuntruths. Shungite has some impressive research behind it. Truth be told, I\nam a fan<\/em>, but the data needs to be put in perspective. Before I get into\nshungite, I\u2019ll bring you up to speed on the latest science about the risks of\nEMFs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why You Should Be Concerned About\nEMFs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences defines EMFs as \u201cinvisible areas of energy, often referred to as radiation, that are associated with the use of electrical power.\u201d A wide range of electronic devices emit EMFs including baby monitors, cell phones, cordless phones, Wi-Fi routers, smart meters, and other wireless devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cell phones<\/a><\/strong>…\ncan\u2019t live with \u2019m, can\u2019t live without \u2019m. Although many continue to poo-poo\nthe risks, there is plenty of data to make my alarm bells ring<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cell phones emit microwave radiation in the 2\nto 5 Gigahertz range. In 2016, the National Toxicology Program released\ndisturbing preliminary results from the largest ever cell phone study showing a\nlink between cell phone radiation and cancer<\/strong><\/a>.[2]<\/sup><\/strong><\/a>\nRats exposed to the frequency of radiation emitted by cell phones develop two\nkinds of cancerous tumors: gliomas in the brain and schwannomas in the heart.\nSadly, these results are in alignment with several observational studies\nfinding links to the same types of tumors in humans, plus acoustic neuromas and\nmeningiomas.[3]<\/sup><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After an extensive scientific review, in 2011\nthe IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health\nOrganization) released a report classifying cell phone radiation as a possible\nhuman carcinogen.[4]<\/sup><\/strong><\/a>\nIn 2015, 190 independent scientists from 39 countries sounded the alarm for\nstricter controls on cell phone radiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet, in spite of all this, the US government\ncontinues to insist cell phones are completely safe<\/em>, and the CDC even deleted<\/em>\ncautions from their cell phone fact sheet.[5]<\/sup><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One study found that using a cellphone for\njust 20 minutes per day increases brain tumor risk by 300 percent over the\ncourse of five years.[6]<\/sup><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whatever risks cell phones and other electronic devices pose to us, they pose an even greater risk<\/em> to our children. Holding a cellphone to your ear allows between 10 and 80 percent of the EMFs to penetrate two inches into your brain\u2014which is especially concerning for infants and children whose heads are smaller and delicate brains are still developing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cell phone radiation may be harming our children even before birth. In a study published in the journal Epidemiology<\/em>, researchers found a 25 percent increase in emotional problems, 34 percent increase in peer relationship issues, 35 percent increased hyperactivity, and 49 percent more behavioral problems among children whose mothers used cellphones during pregnancy, compared to moms who did not.[7]<\/sup><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

EMFs Damage Mitochondria and Break Apart DNA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike ionizing radiation that produces\ndamage by heating up tissues, low-level radiation in the radiofrequency and\nmicrowave part of the spectrum causes biological effects without raising\ntemperatures. According to EMF expert Martin Blank, PhD, these frequencies\n\u201cstress\u201d cellular proteins in human cells. This may explain many of their\nharmful effects such as inflammation<\/strong><\/a>,\ncardiovascular disease, and cancer. [8]<\/sup><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

EMFs have been shown to cause serious\nmitochondrial dysfunction from free radical damage. Mitochondria are the little\nenergy powerhouses inside our cells. Free radical damage is linked to anxiety<\/a><\/strong>,\ndementia<\/strong><\/a>,\nautism<\/strong><\/a>, ADHD<\/a><\/strong>, cardiac arrhythmias, depression, and infertility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Martin Pall of Washington State\n University has published\na number of papers about the mechanisms by which EMFs inflict damage to plants,\nanimals and humans. He has concluded that EMFs damage voltage-gated calcium\nchannels (VGCC), allowing calcium to flood into your cells. This triggers a\nbiochemical cascade resulting in massive numbers of free radicals that damage\nyour cell membranes and mitochondria, break your DNA, accelerate aging, and\ndrive up your risk for chronic disease.[9]<\/sup><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rates of chronic disease<\/strong><\/a> are soaring. Since 1990, we have seen an explosion of\nautoimmune, neurological and metabolic diseases. Alzheimer\u2019s has increased by\n299 percent, depression by 280 percent, and chronic fatigue by a staggering\n11027 percent.[10]<\/sup><\/strong><\/a> <\/sup><\/strong>Many experts speculate that\nmitochondrial damage from EMFs is a major factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
